Calcium and vitamin D work synergistically to promote healthy bones, teeth and muscles. Vitamin D plays a central role in the regulation of calcium absorption and metabolism. Vitamin D can be produced in the skin from the energy of the ultraviolet rays of the sun. It is also available in small doses in food, but the range of foods that contain vitamin D is limited and generally will not provide the required daily 10µg of this vitamin recommended by the government. In July 2016, the government announced that everybody should be taking a vitamin D supplement every day throughout the autumn and winter months in the UK. In addition, the elderly, those who receive little sunlight (through working indoors or using clothes to cover-up for cultural reasons), vegetarians and vegans, and those with digestive, liver and kidney problems may have an increased requirement for vitamin D daily throughout the year.
